Drupalcon 2008 - Drupal college

In this session I will propose Drupal college: a traineeship program that lets wanabe drupal developers work for an established company but from Hungary (e.g. a company from the US has 2 trainees that learn Drupal while working on real projects in Szeged).

The company can train students at reduced and gets the fruits of their work. The student gets a traineeship in a creative collaborative environment and learns Drupal. Students will also get to know Hungarian developers they can later work with when they go back to their home country.

Drupal college would start with a 4 day training that takes place just before Drupalcon 2008 that I will organise in Szeged Hungary (if approved by the association)

Scaling the Drupal.org infrastructure

Drupal.org has been scaling steadily from 6 million to 18 million users per month. Then we hit a wall. This session will explain what happened, and how the Drupal association, the Drupal infrastructure team, and OSUOSL worked together to buy, build, and borrow our way to grow our way to 30 million page views by August 2008.

drupal booking system brainstorm

I want to do this session to see whether it's possible to have a booking system
api for drupal. My thoughts are that thru' the use of an api, contributed
modules could then be created that would provide 'objects' that can be booked,
eg; room booking, flight booking, hire car booking, etc
Also, to have the option of hooking into ecommerce if required (my requirements
are for a room booking system that only takes reservations, payments are done
thru' another system).
I think this is possible by reusing some of the existing core and contributed
modules, but I would like to get other developer's ideas on what else might be
needed.

(The idea to try and do this in drupal came about because every so often someone
posts on d.o requiring a room booking system and they invariably get directed to
the meeting room booking system on sf.net or to use a combination of events,
views, cck, and other modules. So it would be nice to get a proper solution in
drupal)

From HTML to XUL, Web to Desktop

The next generation of technologies are targeting the desktop in a way never before possible. Network enabled applications interact with rich datasets provided on the web, using techniques and technologies common on most advanced websites; user interfaces will be static and dynamic, data will be local and remote, online/offline. How will this evolution happen and what does it mean for the web?

Are you a web developer that knows dynamic HTML, JavaScript and CSS? You are 80% of the way to developing applications in XUL. I'll provide you the resources and knowledge to jump start your entry into XUL and give you directions on where to go for learning that last mile. I'll also cover the ups and downs of the XUL "platform" to help you decide whether it's the right technology for you.

The ESN Galaxy: A Drupal-powered European-wide network

The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a volunteer organization with 250 local branches in 33 European countries. Every branch had its own, often bad and unmaintained, website and a deep reorganization was needed. We will describe how we achieved this, and much more, by using Drupal.

We chose Drupal for a common website template since it was easy to customize (we added a ESN theme and preconfigured some modules), to administer (volunteers are not skilled webmasters) and extend (so that every branch would be able to activate the modules they needed). We then moved on to building a full distribution profile: we will describe advantages and difficulties of this move, which eventually led to our aim of making our website template easy for anyone to install and administer.

A great benefit we got from choosing Drupal was the possibility to visually aggregate data into one website, called the ESN Galaxy: thanks to Drupal's built-in RSS feeds, we can now automatically track the activity of local branches, gather it from the individual websites and display it on a summary page with maps.

Asset Management

Asset management, particularly the management of audio, video, and image content, tends to be the cornerstone of most of our large-scale projects.
While we've had nominal success with a variety of the image management tools for Drupal, every module tends to have weaknesses:
- image-only support
- duplicating work already in core
- poor architecture
- SLOW
- lack of organization or file-system-like structure

While the work we've begun on the am project will likely not be the final say in Drupal asset management, we would like to use it as a forum to discuss strengths and weaknesses of various asset/image management tools available for Drupal, and how we can better leverage Drupal to create a truly powerful, easy, and fast asset management module.

Training is working & doing

A lot of Drupal-community-members helped me last months.
Thanks all!
Can I help the community?
As I am convinced that Open Source is a good direction the world could benefit from, I organize a training/meeting on the Dutch/Belgian border. Students from several schools will be able to learn and train. The concept text to attrack students from schools in Belgium, Holland and Germany reads:
"Learn Open Source 2008
May 24&25th, between Antwerpen & Rotterdam
You learn Drupal from experienced open source software organisations. In the quiet forests between Antwerp and Rotterdam, at youth camp De Luchtballon. In this inspiring natural environment you'll meet the open source community.
Learn at workshops from
1. ....... dutch party:
first contacts are made with Madcap, Hardinxveld-Giessendam (drupal.be/node/547)
2. ....... belgian party?
3. ....... german party?
4. ....... francophone party?"
A presentation in Barcelona will be about why and how of this training/meeting.
I hope to attract people in Barcelona who want to join this north-west-european come-to-gether. I would be happy to learn what wishes you have. You are gladly invited too share your wishes and ideas to have a good & enjoying trainingweekend.
Essential: training is working and doing, and hard trying delivers fun.

N.B.
It is due to positive experience I had on frOScon august 25/26th in St. Augustin Germany and Summerschool august 30th in Brussels Belgium, that today I decided to reserve the dates 24/25th 2008 for this training/meeting.

Semantic Search - Semantic Web and Drupal

Covers the last year of work on integrating Drupal with RDF stores. DrupalCon will conincide with the launch of the full beta of the Semantic Search module. Programmers who may be interested in the session:

Already familar with RDF stores for ways to access RDF stores with Drupal

Curious aout what RDF stores have to offer

For a roadmap of future development

For an alternative to Views, CCK and Standard Search

The presentation will be divided into two parts - the first covering the installation, built in features, and new features including major speed improvements making it feasible for larger sites. The second half will be Q&A focusing on topics that may interest attendees. At DrupalCon 2006 semantic search was presented as "NINA", and was at a proof of concept stage.
Indymedia BoF

Birds Of Feather

BoF

Indymedia's volunteer-run open-publishing sites have some unique requirements in accepting anonymous content submissions, handling all types of multimedia content, dealing with spam and abuse while ensuring anonymity, multilingual support and content translation, and being administered by an editorial collective, with its own editorial processes that must be supported by the drupal site.

This BoF session will be a working session to exchange how drupal-based IMC sites are dealing with problems and have a look at each other's drupal modules and solutions.

Some goals would be: coming up with a list of features that need improvement, and coordinating ongoing work: documentation, drupal install profile, etc.
